College Overview<\/strong><\/h3>\nThe Government of the Republic of Liberia in 1966 sought the assistance of the United Nations Development Fund (UDP) in creating a College of Agriculture and Forestry as a faculty of the University of Liberia. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations was designated as the executing agency.\u00a0 The project derived from two others: a Forestry School developed in 1956, under the Expanded Program of Technical Assistance (EPTA), and a College of Agriculture established in 1962 assisted by the UNDP fund. \u00a0In both cases, FAO was the executing agency.\n\nThe EPTA Forestry Project was succeeded in 1964 by a Special Fund Project planned to end in 1968. The Agriculture Training and Research Project was approved by the Governing Council of the Special Fund in December 1960 and extended in 1967. The Government decided, based on the advice of UNDP and FAO, to merge the two projects in 1967 into the College of Agriculture and Forestry at the University of Liberia.\nPresently there are five undergraduate (B.Sc.) degree-granting departments and 1 non-degree granting department in the College of Agriculture and Forestry, including:\n

    Department of General Agriculture<\/h3>\nThe Department of General Agriculture was established in 1967.\u00a0 It offers a 4-year curriculum in a wide range of courses leading to the award of a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in General Agriculture.\n\nThe department provides interdisciplinary training in the agricultural sciences which consist of the various specialized disciplines in the agricultural profession. The curriculum comprises Crop Science, Soil Science, Animal Science, Agriculture Engineering, Statistics and Marketing, Agriculture Economics, and Farm Management. Other supporting courses are Agricultural Extension, Genetics and Breeding, Entomology and Plant Pathology.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

    Department of Agronomy<\/strong><\/h3>\nThe Department of Agronomy was established College of Agriculture and Forestry against the backdrop of increasing demand for specialized skills in agriculture owing to the diverse nature of the agriculture sector. The department offers a 4-year curriculum leading to the award of B.Sc. degree in Agronomy.\n\nThe course of study in agronomy emphasizes basic understanding of relevant courses in pure and applied sciences as well as specific orientation or career path in four (4) agronomic options or areas of specialization including: 1) Crop Production, 2) Crop Protection, 3) Soil Science, and 4) Horticulture. \u00a0Students pursuing studies in agronomy are required to select one of these four agronomy options as area of concentration.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

    Department of Agricultural and Extension Education<\/h3>\nThe Department of Agriculture Extension Education is one of the six academic departments in the College of Agriculture and Forestry. Since its establishment in the early 1970s it has operated as a non-degree granting department but offers service courses to the other departments. In addition to offering service courses, prior to the civil war, the Department offered short-term courses in various agricultural disciplines ranging from one week to three months.\n\nAgricultural extension and advisory service plays major roles in the overall enhancement of agricultural activities in Liberia and the world at large. Having a department of agricultural extension that offers only service courses is a disservice to students majoring in agriculture and the agricultural sector in general. \u00a0Extension offers a wide range of service delivery and technology transfer to farmers. For example, extension accomplishes its mission through three main conceptual models (technology transfer, problem solving and imparting knowledge). Contingent on the role extension plays in agricultural development, the department considers it expedient to offer a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Agricultural and Extension Education beginning in 2019.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
