Dennis, who died on March 6, 2022 in Englewood, New Jersey, United States of America.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The vigil service was held Tuesday in the auditorium of the University\u2019s Capitol Hill campus, bringing together the bereaved family, current and former presidents of the University of Liberia, presidents of other universities, government officials, UL vice presidents, faculty, staff and students, among others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Dennis\u2019 remains were given appropriate escort by UL authorities into the auditorium at the start of the vigil service.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a tribute, the President of the University of Liberia Rev. Prof. Dr. Julius Julukon Sarwolo Nelson said the demise of Dr. Dennis is a profound loss for the University of Liberia and the country\u2019s educational sector.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis is a profound loss for Liberia\u2019s flagship institution of higher learning, the University of Liberia, and the educational sector of the Republic of Liberia,\u201d said Dr. Nelson, who served as Vice President and Dean of Students during the tenure of Dr. Dennis.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">President Nelson described the late Dr. Dennis as a man of deep trust with extraordinary talent and a gifted administrator par excellence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHis leadership on the University of Liberia campus was all encompassing and strong. In the last three decades he devoted his time to educating young people at the University of Liberia and in Liberia at large, including the United States,\u201d said Dr. Nelson.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">President Nelson credited the late Dr. Dennis, and Professor Emeritus at the A.M. Dogliotti School of Medicine, University of Liberia, and former member of the UL Board of Trustees, for having advocated for the expansion of the University of Liberia campuses, adding that UL now has four campuses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Ophelia Inez Weeks, immediate past president of the University of Liberia and current Executive Director of the Ellen Johnson &#8211; Sirleaf Center for Women and Development, said she will miss her colleague and mentor, the late Dr. Dennis.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16020\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16020\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16020\" src=\"https:\/\/ul.edu.lr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/DSC_8110.jpg\" alt=\"Rev. Nelson, Jr., President of the University of Liberia<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a tribute read on behalf of former Liberian President and Visitor of the University of Liberia, Mrs. Ellen Johnson &#8211; Sirleaf, Dr. Weeks said it was former president Sirleaf\u2019s utmost pleasure to appoint Dr. Dennis as UL\u2019s 13th president.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHe was indefatigable, internationally respected, an eminent professor, scientist and scholar who had a deep commitment to higher education who also had a wonderful sense of humor. A Liberian who had maintained a distinguished and illustrious career in the United States of America,\u201d said Dr. Weeks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She said the late Dr. Dennis was a man who helped establish Liberia\u2019s first Biomedical Research Institution and had served as its founding Director in 1975.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She explained that Dr. Dennis was a strong advocate for the establishment of a National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL). Dr Dennis served as a member of the institute\u2019s inaugural board.&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Delivering the exhortation on the theme: \u201cMission Accomplished, \u201cUL Vice President for Graduate Studies, Rev. Dr. Jonathan C. Taylor said Dr. Dennis completed his task of serving his institution and the country very well.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speaking from a text taken from the New Testament Book II Timothy 4:6, Dr. Taylor described Dr. Dennis as&nbsp; an educator par excellence, a distinguished Liberian scholar, a servant of God and a man of great humility and faith.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Representative Matthew Zarzar, Chair of the Board of Trustees, University of Liberia, said the vigil service was a celebration of the home-going of a fellow trustee, a scientist, an educator, a professor, a statesman and a visionary.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Romelle Horton, President of Cuttington University, said Dr. Dennis\u2019 death truly hit her and the university family hard, adding that \u201cit is difficult to express the sadness that they feel.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Horton said the late Dr. Dennis was a dedicated son of this soil [Liberia], a family man, and a strong educator who brought his deep knowledge of academic excellence to a variety of issues that have been critical to the transformation of the educational sector, especially tertiary education.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16021\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16021\" style=\"width: 201px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-16021 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/ul.edu.lr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/yede-201x300.jpg\" alt=\"Dr. Yede Baker Dennis, wife of Dr. Emmet A.
