Monrovia, May 21, 2026 \u2013 <\/strong>The University of Liberia (UL) and Senegal\u2019s Cheikh Anta Diop University (UCAD) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to facilitate student and faculty exchanges between the two institutions. The UL delegation to Dakar, Senegal, is led by President Layli Maparyan, who signed the agreement on behalf of her institution. UCAD Vice Rector Prof. Idrissa Ly, signed for his institution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Dr. Maparyan said the partnership aims to strengthen joint research and encourage collaborative publications between the universities. \u201cI would also like to see training opportunities for our faculty as we work to increase the number of faculty members with PhDs and other terminal degrees at our university.\u201d

To support that effort, President Maparyan and her delegation traveled to Dakar on Tuesday, May 19, and signed the partnership agreement between the two universities to boost academic exchanges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Maparyan also praised key stakeholders who helped to advance the agreement, including Liberian President and Visitor of the University of Liberia H.E. Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Liberian Foreign Minister Madam Sara Beysolow Nyanti, and Liberia\u2019s Embassy in Senegal for facilitating the MoU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She further emphasized that African liberation has long been a bilingual enterprise, highlighting developments in both Francophone and Anglophone countries. In that context, President Maparyan said maintaining the partnership under a Pan-African umbrella is essential to its success in the past, present, and future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While in Dakar, President Maparyan and the UL delegation visited the Liberian Embassy, meeting with Ambassador Ali Sylla and his staff, and lauding him for facilitating the relationship between UL and UCAD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chartered in 1951 as a university and established as Liberia College in 1862, UL enrolls over 28,000 students across eight colleges, as well as graduate and professional schools. UCAD, meanwhile, has more than 90,000 students across 83 departments, offering seven doctoral programs and more than 600 professional training programs.
