{"id":7858,"date":"2019-02-19T19:36:39","date_gmt":"2019-02-19T19:36:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ul.edu.lr\/?p=7858"},"modified":"2019-02-19T19:36:39","modified_gmt":"2019-02-19T19:36:39","slug":"ul-concludes-inter-college-tournament-as-teachers-college-wins-soccer-trophy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ul.edu.lr\/new\/ul-concludes-inter-college-tournament-as-teachers-college-wins-soccer-trophy\/","title":{"rendered":"UL Concludes Inter-college Tournament, As Teachers College Wins Soccer Trophy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Final Exams at the University of Liberia is scheduled to being on Monday, the 25<sup>th<\/sup> of February, however, that could not prevent students from participating in a major inter-college sporting event that brought seven undergraduate colleges together last \u00a0Friday, February 15, 2019.<\/p>\n<p>The tournament which was organized under the theme: \u201cUL Seven Colleges Academic Unification Sports Meet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The colleges competed in five sporting categories: Soccer, Basketball, Volleyball, Kickball and Track-and-Field.<\/p>\n<p>In the soccer version on Friday, the final brought neck-to-neck the William V.S. Tubman Teachers College and Sinje Technical College in a great soccer showdown that ended goalless after seventy minutes of play. The two teams then went into a post-match penalty shootout that saw Teachers College lifting the gigantic trophy with a 4-2 win over Sinje Technical College.<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-7860 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/ul.edu.lr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/4-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The College of Engineering clinched the basketball trophy after defeating the University\u2019s oldest college, Liberia College in the day\u2019s earlier match. \u00a0In volleyball, Agriculture College crushed the Pen Pushers of Teachers College, while the soil girls of Agriculture College walloped the technical girls of Sinje in the kickball version. Sinje on the other hand walked away with the trophy for track- and-field.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking in a special interview with UL relations after the games, UL\u2019s Director of sports, Kadalah Kromah described the staging of the games as exciting and fruitful, saying, \u201cThe games have always been organized by the sports Department to spot players for the Varsity Teams: Football, Basketball, Volleyball and Kickball teams of the University of Liberia. \u201cWe specifically have these competitions to enable us select the various varsity teams.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Director Kromah added that the events also serve as a bridge to entertain and unite the students on campus, \u201cEvery institution has sports as a means of entertainment; as a means of the students coming together to know one another.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Adding, \u201cThis year\u2019s tournament was specifically organized to spot and prepare the UL\u2019s Varsity teams for the upcoming UL-Cuttington Meet, which is expected to be held soon. Dr. Weeks is very impressed and interested in the pending<\/p>\n<p>UL-Cuttington and other universities\u2019 games, and so we are doing everything to have the teams ready.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Director Kromah has disclosed that his department was able to spot players for the various varsity teams during the tournament. He said twenty young and talented players were spotted for the soccer team of the university.<\/p>\n<p>Director Kromah has at the same time revealed plans to have both male and female teams for the different categories of sports being practiced at the University of Liberia. He said having female teams for soccer; volleyball, track and field and basketball will bring more enthusiasm to the games.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we want to participate in tournaments with other universities in the future, we have to have these teams\u201d, he noted.<\/p>\n<p>The one-time Lone Star of Liberia coach now director of sports at the University of Liberia said he sees the just ended tournament as a foundation for the commencement of a new university sporting arena, stating that he hopes to see the UL again making name in International universities\u2019 tournaments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe played against the Universities of Ivory coast, Ghana and others, and the results were very good for the University of Liberia, so we need more support in order to get on track again,\u201d he concluded.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Final Exams at the University of Liberia is scheduled to being on Monday, the 25th of February, however, that could not prevent students from participating in a major inter-college sporting event that brought seven undergraduate colleges together last \u00a0Friday, February 15, 2019.
