UL Partners with LRA To Boost Students Tax Education

Monrovia, Liberia [September 17, 2026] – The University of Liberia (UL) and the Liberia Revenue Authority (LRA) held a one-day workshop Thursday under the theme “LRA Taxpayer Education workshop” in UL Auditorium on Capitol Hill.

The workshop aimed at enhancing students’ knowledge on being responsible citizens and leaders of national development.

The UL President Dr. Layli Maparyan said that the initiative is important because it sets the stage for students to understand their rights and responsibilities as taxpayers, which she described as essential part of citizenship and national development. According to her, students are future professionals and leaders who need to be informed of how taxes work and how they can contribute to national development. Dr. Maparyan noted that knowledge about taxes is not limited to compliance but it also about making the governing system strong through a collective effort.

Dr. Maparyan called on all students to serve as ambassadors for tax wherever they find themselves in the larger communities.

“May you share whatever you learned today with others” she emphasized.

Dr. Maparyan expressed her sincere appreciation to the LRA for the educational initiative to the university of Liberia.

She made the statement during her welcoming remarks at the LRA Taxpayer workshop organized by the Liberia Revenue The meeting brought together hundreds of students of the University of Liberia and officials of UL and LRA.

At the workshop, LRA assistant commissioner for taxpayer service Isaac Stevens said that it is the right and responsibility of citizens to pay taxes. He explained how taxes are distributed amongst government entities, including the University of Liberia, to carry out their activities including infrastructure development. He said that without taxes a nation cannot progress and that it also leaves citizens to suffer the lack of basic facilities.

Mr. Stevens noted that Liberia needs to advance its development programs such as education, health, roads, electricity, pipe bond water amongst others and that this can only be done if citizens remained committed to taxpaying. According to him, Liberia is transitioning from GST to VAT to harmonize with regional compliance, the LRA head for Taxpayer Service, Mr. Stevens said. He stressed the need to continue tax awareness education with the UL, adding “we want to continue this collaboration with the State- run University.”
