A week long freshman orientation kicked off on Wednesday, October 17, 2018 at the University of Liberia with more than 900 students of the A. Romeo Horton College of Business and Public Administration and the College of General Studies receiving the first taste of college life and experience as they embark upon their academic journey at the University of Liberia.

More than half of the admitted freshman selected a major in the Business College. With some dressed in white T-shirts and black jeans, the newly matriculated freshman were jubilant with many unable to contain their excitement as they listened to speeches, words of admonition, music, a short drama skit on how to succeed academically, among others.

Dr. Ophelia Weeks, President of the University of Liberia, was the first to welcome and congratulate the new freshman, challenging them to make the university competitive among other universities in the sub-region through their output.

“I wish you well as you enter these hallow homes of the university but challenge you to make UL competitive and outstanding,” said Dr. Weeks on the first day of the orientation held in the historic UL Auditorium on the Capitol Hill Campus of the University of Liberia.

Dr. Weeks admonished the students to be focused and determined in their pursuit for quality tertiary education, adding, “Keep your eyes on the prize.”

Dr. Weeks said she believes that for the students to be successful they must concentrate and remember the purpose for gaining enrollment at the University of Liberia.

Earlier, the Vice President and Dean of Students, Dr. Julius Sarwolo

Nelson welcomed the freshman students to the university, saying, “You are the successful ones among the more than 3,000 candidates that sat the 2018 Entrance Examination and at the same time serving as consolation for your colleagues who were not successful, congratulations to you.”

Also speaking, University of Liberia Student Union (ULSU) President, Flomo Mao Maiwo, thanked the freshman students for the their decision to advance their education at the University of Liberia, stating, “Your official admission today into the university marks the dawning of a new day in your academic sojourn, so continue to push forward and make your family and nation proud.”

Heads of colleges and departments conducted extra sessions to orientate the freshman on the activities of their respective colleges and departments

The orientation will continue through October 18-20 on the Fendall Campus in Fendall and the David A. Stratz-Sinje Technical and Vocational College in Grand Cape Mount County.
