The School of Midwifery is a professional Registered Midwifery [RM) program regulated by the Liberian Board for Nursing and Midwifery (LBNM) that authorizes and grant licenses to Nursing and Midwifery schools upon meeting up with set accreditations standards to open and operate.
The Registered Midwifery [RM) Program at the University of Liberia College of Health Sciences was established on February 23/24 2023, after going through the Liberian Board of Nursing and Midwifery (LBNM) accreditations and acceptance standards. This program is a basic and direct entry four years BSc program that prepares and equips highly competent healthcare providers with requisite education, clinical skills and expertise needed for the provision of efficient health care globally.
The BSc. Midwifery curriculum, was built on the existing nursing and midwifery curricula, that were developed with support from United States Agency for International Development (USAID) through Rebuilding Basic Health Services. It and harmonizes with the West African College of Nursing and officially adopted by the Liberian Board of Nursing and Midwifery (LBNM).

The primary function of the School of Midwifery within the University of Liberia is to educate and train students to become qualified midwives who can provide essential maternal and newborn health care services Its responsibilities and objectives are focused on equipping students with the necessary knowledge and skills to provide safe and competent care to women and their infants during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum period The responsibilities and objectives of the School of Midwifery include:
1. Education and Training: The School of Midwifery is responsible for providing a comprehensive education and training program that equips students with the knowledge, skills, and competencies needed to deliver high-quality maternal and newborn health care services. This includes courses in anatomy, physiology, obstetrics, neonatology, family planning, and other relevant subjects.
2. Clinical Experience: The School of Midwifery is responsible for providing students with hands-on clinical experience in various health care settings, including hospitals, clinics, and community health centers. This practical training is essential for students to develop their skills in assisting with childbirth, providing prenatal and postnatal care, and managing obstetric emergencies.
3. Research and Evidence-Based Practice: The School of Midwifery encourages students and faculty members to engage in research activities that contribute to the advancement of midwifery and maternal health care practices. This includes conducting studies, generating evidence-based practices, and disseminating research findings to improve the quality of care provided by midwives.
4. Collaboration and Partnerships: The School of Midwifery collaborates with government agencies, non-governmental organizations, international partners, and other academic institutions to strengthen the midwifery education and training program. These partnerships help to enhance the resources available to the school, provide opportunities for student and faculty exchange, and contribute to the professional development of midwives in Liberia.

Petition the Academic Coordinating Committee [ACC] to establish Midwifery Program Regulations as required by the Liberia Board of Nursing and Midwifery at the University of Liberia College of Health Sciences April 17, 2023
Standard Operating Procedure [SOP] for vetting students at the school of Midwifery was done and approved June 13, 2023. These protocols put in place ensured that the students who are admitted meet the necessary requirements and possess the qualifications needed to pursue their studies in midwifery. On April 8, 2024, the School of Midwifery joined the WHO and other partners in celebrating World Health Day under the Theme. Your Health is Your Right.
