Faculty members of the University of Liberia (UL), alongside other high profile participants from Liberia and abroad, are due to serve as panelists for Mapping Progress in Liberia,  a webinar that will convene leaders and experts to discuss and assess Liberia’s past, present, and future governance trajectory, utilizing the Mo Ibrahim Foundation’s Ibrahim Index of African Governance (IIAG).

The Mapping Progress in Liberia webinar which takes place on August 26, 2021 is an initiative of the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Presidential Center for Women and Development in continuation of its mission to champion women’s ascension to the highest levels of leadership and challenge systemic barriers to girls and women’s advancement.

Panelists for the Security and Rule of Law in Africa discussion include Cllr. Negbalee Warner, Dean, Louis Arthur Grimes School of Law, University of Liberia (UL); Cllr Gloria Musu Scott, former Chief Justice, Republic of Liberia;  Cllr. Yvette Chesson Wureh, Founder, Angie Brooks International Center and Major General Prince C. Johnson III, Chief of Staff, Armed Forces of Liberia, Ministry of Defense.

Professor Funmi Olonisakin, VP & Vice Principal (International) Professor of Security, Leadership & Development, King’s College, London will serve as the Moderator for the Security and Rule of Law in Africa discussion.

Dr. Moses M. Zinnah, Vice President for Academic Affairs, University of Liberia(UL); Dr Romelle Horton, President, Cuttington University, Liberia; Dr. Christiana Hena, Founder, Healthy Women/Healthy Liberia; Dr. Mosoka Fallah, former Director General, National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL); and Mr. Silas Siakor, Environmentalist and Founder of the Sustainable Development Institute will serve as panelists for the  Human Development in Africa (i.e. education, health, social protection, sustainable environment) discussion. 

This panel discussion will be moderated by Dr. Olivia Lwabukuna, Professor of law and Development in Africa, SOAS, University of London.

Panelists for the Participation, Rights and Inclusion in Africa discussion include Madam Julia Duncan Cassell, former Minister of Gender, Children & Social Protection; Ms. Kula Fofana, President, People’s Foundation Africa, & Amujae Leader; Mr. Ernest Duku Jallah, Executive Director Libpedia, & Deputy Director for Programs, Federation of Liberian Youth; and Mr. Hh Zaizay, Executive Director, President’s Young Professionals Program.

Ambassador Dr. Al-Hassan Conteh, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Liberia to the Federal Republic of Nigeria, with concurrent accreditation to the Republics of Benin and Equatorial Guinea, and Liberia’s Permanent Representative to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) will serve as Moderator for the Participation, Rights and Inclusion in Africa discussion.

Mr. Boima Kamara, former  Minister of Finance, Liberia; Hon. Monie Captan, Liberia Electricity Corporation Board Chair & former Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Millennium Challenge Account-Liberia; Madam Mawine G. Diggs, Minister of Commerce & Industry, Liberia; and Madam Jeanine Cooper, Minister of Agriculture will serve as panelists for the Foundations for Economic Opportunity in Africa discussion.

This panel discussion will be moderated by  Dr. Aloysius Uche Ordu, Director-Africa Growth Initiative, Senior Fellow -Global Economy & Development, The Brookings Institution, Washington D. C. USA.

One of the most fundamental tasks of the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Presidential Center for Women and Development is to gather, generate, analyze, and use pertinent data to ensure that its programs and the support it provides women leaders are evidence-based and responsive to the changes within the African governance landscape.

The Center has invited the University of Liberia’s students, faculty, and parents to join it on 26 August 2021 for Mapping Progress in Liberia, a webinar that will convene leaders and experts to discuss and assess Liberia’s past, present, and future governance trajectory, utilizing the Mo Ibrahim Foundation’s Ibrahim Index of African Governance.

The IIAG assesses governance performance in 54 African countries and is the most comprehensive dataset measuring African governance. The results of the 2020 IIAG serve as the most up-to-date baseline of the current challenges facing good governance in Africa.

The index assesses governments on their delivery of public goods and services in four categories. Each of these categories will be the theme of one of four panel discussions held throughout the day:

1. Security and Rule of Law: 11:00 AM – 12:30 PM GMT
2. Participation, Rights, and Inclusion: 1:00 PM – 2:30 PM GMT
3. Human Development: 3:00 PM – 4:30 PM GMT
4. Foundations for Economic Opportunity: 5:00 PM – 6:30 PM GMT
