Engineering, Straz-Sinje Get New Deans

The President of the University of Liberia (UL), Rev. Prof. Dr. Julius Julukon Sarwolo Nelson, Jr., has made additional appointments, elevating some faculty members and transferring others to new positions. Assistant Professor Adolphus Nippae has been appointed as Acting Dean of the David A. Straz -Sinje Technical and Vocational College by Dr. Nelson during a Faculty Senate Meeting held on Thursday, October 14, 2021 in the Theater of the Fendall Campus, Louisiana, Montserrado County.

Announcing the appointment of Assistant Professor Nippae, Dr. Nelson said the selection was based on consultations with faculty and recommendation by Academic Affairs, pending a report to the Board of Trustees for its approval.  Dr. Nelson explained that Prof. Nippae has been around for a long time and has served as chairperson of the Electrical and Engineering Department, and has played a role in the Engineering Program at Straz – Sinje in Grand Cape Mount County.

Mr. Hun – Bu Tulay, former Liberia Water and Sewer Corporation (LWSC) Managing Director,  was also presented to his Faculty Senate colleagues as the new Dean of the College of Engineering, replacing Associate Prof. Augustus Moore, who resigned earlier.

Having spent several years working in the United States and with the Government of Liberia, Mr. Tulay comes to the new job at the University of Liberia with many credentials, including BSc in Mathematics and Physics; BSc in Civil Engineering, and an MSc in Sanitary Engineering.

Dr. Nelson also announced that Dr. Lawrence Sherman, who has been serving as Acting Dean at the Medical School, is now the Dean of the School following the

approval of the Board of Trustees of the University of Liberia.   

During the same Faculty Senate session, Dr. Darlington Davis was appointed as the Acting Chairperson of the Department of Computer Information Sciences (DCIS), a new program that will be launched very soon for Academic Year 2021 – 2022.

The UL President said Dr. Davis and UL Vice President for Information Technology, Dr. Darren Wilkins will work together in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) unit to help start the processes that will lead to the establishment of the full Department of Computer Information Sciences.

According to Dr. Nelson, DCIS will be lodged in the Thomas Jefferson Faulkner College of Health Sciences and Technology and Environmental and Climate Change for now. The UL President detailed that in addition to several years of work, Dr. Davis comes to the job with several accolades, including BSc in Mathematics, BSc Electrical and Software Engineering, MSc in Applied Mathematics and PhD in Applied Mathematics.

Continuing with the appointment, President Nelson transferred Mr. Matthew Sion K. Wreh from the College of Science and Technology to be the new Director of the Honors’ Program.

A member of the Alumni Association, Mr. Wreh has been at the University for many years, working with Institutional Development as one of the Plant Coordinators, and also taking up assignment at the College of Science and Technology as one of the College Coordinators prior to his transfer.

In their separate responses following their appointments, the Acting Dean of David A. Straz – Sinje, prof. Nippae thanked the President for his preferment and promised to work with all stakeholders for the purpose of moving the College and the University to  a higher height.

“I say thanks to the Office of the President for preferring me to serve at David A. Straz, and we say that we will work alongside all stakeholders, particularly those that

offer courses in Sinje.” He said.

Also responding, Mr. Tulay explained that he has been a part – time teacher since 1994, pledging his commitment to meet Administration’s expectation in his new role. He also challenged his colleagues to work in the direction that takes the University to

the golden age, and to teach students to make them marketable.
