Universities in the U.S. Commit Support to UL

Capitol Hill Campus, Monrovia Liberia, March 7, 2025 | Several institutions of higher learning in the United States of America have committed their support to the University of Liberia’s (UL) overall goals of funding and boosting the academic profile.

The disclosure was made by UL President Prof. Dr. Layli Maparyan on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, at a press conference on the UL Capitol Hill campus upon her return from a visit to the U.S.

According to Dr. Maparyan, her visit to institutions of higher learning in the U.S. was to seek support for the UL through strategic partnerships, alumni engagement, and leadership development.

Dr. Maparyan informed the public that she held talks with the University of Liberia Alumni Association in America (ULAAA) to increase support for the institution.

She also held discussions with the MAP Institute on ways to secure medical supplies for the UL College of Health Sciences program, especially now that there is an imminent drawdown in all USAID projects, including the CHSL (Combined Higher Secondary Level).

Dr. Maparyan believes that those interventions will bridge some of the funding, materials, and infrastructure gaps at the CHSL.

She also held further discussions with the Higher Education and Technical Training Institute (HETT) and a host of related programs to strengthen HECA and implore new fundraising strategies for expanding the UL resource database.

Dr. Maparyan further disclosed that she advocated to her counterparts for more Ph.D. faculty at the UL through the awarding of scholarship slots.

Additionally, Dr. Maparyan revealed that she sought support from Kansas State University to establish a Master’s or Ph.D. program in Conflict Resolution at the UL.

She also held talks with U.S. technology giant, Georgia Tech for the possibility of establishing a Master’s program in computer science for technology advancement.

Meanwhile, Dr. Maparyan participated in the signing of two Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with the MBC for an online Hospitality Management Certificate and the CSU for a Health Care Administration program.

She along with UL alumni members, and scores of Liberians, participated in a fundraising rally in Atlanta to raise funds.

Dr. Maparyan described her trip as a step forward to achieve her goals.

These partnerships and collaboration underscore the importance of linking the UL with international partners for rapid support.

The UL President vowed during her inauguration on January 10, 2025, among many priorities, to increase UL’s endowment and boost the current status of the institution, using her international contacts.
