The events – featuring volleyball, basketball, kickball, football, and track and field – were organized by the university’s newly launched Division of Athletics & Sports. The games, held on June 5, brought together participants from various UL campuses as students showcased athletic ability and school spirit in a bid to claim supremacy.

Throughout the competition, fans and spectators packed the sidelines to cheer Lux Warriors, a banner used by both old and new student teams. The matchups offered students an opportunity to build connections across generations while competing in a structured and disciplined setting.

By the end of the day, the results reflected a split pattern of strength. Old students won volleyball, kickball, and football, while new students prevailed in basketball and all track and field events.

In volleyball, the old-student team won two sets with a score of 50 points. In basketball, the new student team edged the old group with 31 points to 29.
kickball also went the way of the old students, who scored 4 points compared with 1 for the new team. In football, the match was decided by penalties, with the old students converting four penalty kicks to the new students’ three.

On the track, new students swept the day, winning all four events: 100m, 200m, 800m, and the 4×1 Mixed Relay.
University officials attended the events. The President of the University of Liberia, Dr. Layli Maparyan, participated in the athletics program and officially launched the basketball category with a kickoff, praising students for the energy and discipline on display.

The turnout and commitment aimed to strengthen students beyond the classroom. The games were staged shortly after the official launch of the UL’s Division of Athletics and Sports on May 29 – the first ever. The division formalizes athletics and sports as a core part of campus life and recognizes their role in academic achievement, community engagement, and national development.

Leading the division is Associate Professor Sekou W. Konneh, credited with decades of extensive experience and knowledge in national-level sports and athletics leadership.
The Division of Athletics and Sports reflects UL’s commitment to student development, wellness, leadership, and excellence.
